natural bridge state park - north freedom, wi
There's so much to see in Baraboo, but the beauty of Natural Bridge State Park should not be missed. This 530-acre State Park features Wisconsin's largest naturally formed sandstone arch. The bridge opening is 25 feet high by 35 feet wide. Large enough that trees grow within it! Directly beneath the bridge is a rock shelter once used by Paleo-Indians, and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
There are four miles of hiking trails within the park. The trail directly to the Natural Bridge is a good deal uphill, with some steep steps, but we managed it fine. The trail is a 1-mile loop. Climbing on the bridge or the rock shelter is prohibited in order to protect the natural area. There is a lookout along the trail to the right of the bridge, though somehow we missed it (next time!).
For more hiking, there is a 2-mile hiking trail south of Hwy C. (opposite the parking lot). On site at the parking area is a rest room, and plenty of space for a picnic. Dogs are permitted, but they must be on-leash at all times.
The park is open year-round, Day Use Only: 6am - 11pm.
Location: E7792 Co. Rd. PF, North Freedom, WI (Sauk County) For more information click here.
